How to Avoid the Battle
Travel between planets does not use the grav drive, nor fuel, as one of the loading screen tips clued me in to.
However, if you go out to the galaxy screen (Tab -> StarMap) then select a nearby system, you can jump there, even while in combat (as long as you’ve given your grav drive power).
This took me a few tries to figure out as well, good question.
